Being a career woman in today’s world is becoming more complex. Society has become increasingly more accepting of women in the workplace and is promoting us to higher paying jobs – but not the top jobs. Only 2% of Fortune 500 companies have female CEOs while we have surpassed men in the middle management layers. We are graduating with bachelors and masters degrees at higher rates than men today so what is happening here? Why can’t we break through to the top? Or maybe the real question is – do we want to?
As I grow and evolve in my own career, moving up the corporate ladder, I find myself more and more confused as to what I really want out of life. Yes I want the same as everyone else – success, financial stability, a loving family, etc. But at what cost?!? Can women today really have it all? What defines "having it all"? What defines success?
Did I get my MBA for 60-70 hour work weeks and enough stress to drive me to anxiety medications and monthly massage? Okay, well, maybe the massage part ;) But, really, what does a working women today want and how can she get it?
